COMPRESSION QUESTIONS

What is gradient compression?

Therafirm® therapeutic gradient compression hosiery delivers a controlled amount of pressure greatest at the ankle and gradually decreases towards the top of the stocking to promote better blood flow, assist in preventing swelling and provide relief for tired, achy legs. Therafirm® is 100% made in the USA in our own manufacturing facilities. For almost 60 years Therafirm® has been a leader in manufacturing healthy, gradient compression products. We are committed to providing quality gradient compression products and innovating the way people view compression.

What does "mmHg" stand for?

mmHg stands for millimeters of Mercury. This measurement is used to measure pressure. Since gradient compression hosiery exert a gradually decreasing amount of pressure up the leg, this unit of measure helps express the amount of pressure the wearer will feel.

What are levels of compression?

Levels of compression are common and each represent a different amount of pressure or tightness that garments places on the leg. Common compression levels include light (10–15mmHg), mild (15–20mmHg), moderate (20–30mmHg), and firm (30–40mmHg). The higher the compression level the tighter the garment will feel on the leg. Higher compression levels are often prescribed for those with more severe venous or medical needs.

Are compression products hard to get on?

Many of Therafirm® gradient compression products are designed with the most innovative fibers making our products easier to put. For patients that are not used to wearing gradient compression products, it may seem more difficult to don the products at first. Check out tips and tricks for donning gradient compression.

PRODUCT QUESTIONS

Is the top part of tights and pantyhose tight?

All of the Therafirm® branded tights, footless tights, and pantyhose feature a wide knit-in waist band. This unique top is soft and comfortable for all day wear and will not dig into the waist like traditional elastic bands. The high stretch material allows are greater flexibility in the fit while helping to keep the garment in place all day.

How high should the knee highs and trouser socks be on the leg?

Therafirm® knee high garments should be positioned approximately two fingers below the bend of knee. Ease by Therafirm®, Core-Spun by Therafirm®, and TheraSport® products are very stretchy so it is important the garment is placed correctly. In addition, to ensure a proper fit and optimal comfort, adjust the garment so the material is evenly distributed on the leg. Check that there are no creases or wrinkles.

How do I measure for Therafirm® compression products?

The key to a proper fit is in the measurements. Knowing them assures that the size you select is the size that will fit—the first time.

Patients should be measured when they first get up in the morning to prevent measurements based upon the affected area’s circumference after swelling has occurred. Measure the patient while he or she is standing. If the fitting cannot take place before the patient has been on his/her feet for some time, the patient’s legs and feet should be elevated for 15 minutes prior to taking the measurements.

Take snug measurements against the skin. Avoid measuring over socks or slacks. Never allow folds in stockings. Never remove any wound dressings.

1. Measure the ankle circumference at the narrowest part of the ankle, above the ankle bone.

2. Measure the calf circumference at the fullest part of the calf.

3. For Knee High, skip to Step 4. For Thigh High and Pantyhose, measure the thigh circumference at the widest part of the thigh.

4. For Thigh High and Pantyhose skip to Step 5. For Knee High, measure the length from the floor to just below the bend of the knee.

5. For Thigh High and Pantyhose, measure the length from the floor to the gluteal fold.

Core-Spun, Ease, Preggers, and TheraSport are very stretchy products.  Do I need to fit these products differently?

Therafirm® garments can be fit using the sizing guide for the applicable brand. Please note that many of our Therafirm® brands feature high stretch yarns that should be a consideration in measuring and donning. When measuring for garments that are available in length options, if a patient is on the cusp of the length guideline, we recommend using the shorter length.

It is important for the wearer to keep in mind the stretchability when putting on Core-Spun, Ease, Core-Sport, Preggers or TheraSport garments to ensure they are donned properly. Because these garments are very stretchy, it is important the garment is placed correctly. For knee highs, the garment should be able two fingers below the bend of the knee. For thigh highs, the band should be placed at the upper thigh, below the gluteal fold. While donning the garment, it is important to adjust the material so it is evenly distributed on the leg. It is common to have too much material at the ankle or lower portion of the leg. To adjust this, the excess material should be pulled gently from the bottom and worked up the leg to ensure it is evenly distributed from the ankle to the knee or upper thigh. It is also important to check that there are no creases or wrinkles.
